Freedmans Labor Contract, 1868.

Agreement, 1868, between H. L. Whipple and African Americans who would be working for him during that year. The contract is divided into three basic sections. The first section sets up the way in which the wages would be paid and additional benefits that Whipple would provide for his workers. The second section is composed of five rules and regulations that the workers agreed to follow. The rules define the conduct expected of the employees ("to obey cheerfully and willingly all orders...to be polite and respectful to all"); the amount of time they would be expected to work; the type of work they were expected to perform; and any penalties that would result because of absences, damage to property or disorderly conduct. The third section has the names of the African Americans with their marks; the date each one set their mark to the agreement; and the amount each one would be paid for the year. The contract is witnessed by I. M. Crenshaw.
